ORV Sagar Manthan - India's New Ocean Research Vessel

ORV Sagar Manthan is an ocean research ship built in India for deep-sea science. Yard 3041, as the shipyard calls it, was launched on 9 September 2026 at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers' Rishi Bankim Shipyard in Kolkata, and is being built for NCPOR under the Ministry of Earth Sciences at a cost of about 840 crore rupees. It is not the Samudra Manthan offshore exploration scheme, which is a separate subject with its own card here, and it is not Samudrayaan, the crewed-submersible programme; this is a surface research vessel. Delivery is due in 2028, after which it will take over from the 43-year-old ORV Sagar Kanya.
