Bharat Forecast System
India's weather forecasts got sharper on 26 May 2025, when the Ministry of Earth Sciences launched the Bharat Forecast System, built by IITM Pune. It halves the country's operating grid from 12 km to 6 km - fine enough to issue a distinct outlook for every cluster of panchayats - and has already lifted extreme-rainfall prediction by roughly 30 percent. It now runs as one model among several inside the India Meteorological Department, on supercomputers paid for through Mission Mausam, which Parliament was told on 13 August 2026 will spend Rs 1,342.29 crore in 2026-27 and work through six verticals to 2031. Around the model sits the delivery machinery: 130 agromet units, panchayat-level bulletins, four public apps and a web platform that turns forecasts into hazard alerts.
