Bharat Forecast System

India's weather forecasts just got sharper. The Bharat Forecast System, launched on 26 May 2025 by the Ministry of Earth Sciences and built by IITM Pune, halves the country's operating grid from 12 km to 6 km - fine enough to issue a distinct outlook for every cluster of panchayats. Running on the expanded Arka and Arunika supercomputers under Mission Mausam, it ranks among the earliest home-grown high-resolution forecast systems anywhere, and has already lifted extreme-rainfall prediction by roughly 30 percent.
