IndiaAI Mission
The IndiaAI Mission is the Centre's ₹10,371.92-crore, five-year wager on owning an artificial-intelligence stack rather than renting one. Cleared by the Union Cabinet in March 2024 and steered by MeitY under the slogan 'Making AI in India, and making AI work for India', it runs on seven pillars stretching from cheap GPU compute and a national datasets platform (AIKosh, now past 15,000 datasets) to home-grown foundation models, skilling, startup capital and safety rules. Parliament answers through August 2026 count 237 projects on the compute pool, 20 sovereign model proposals, 58 AI centres of excellence coming up and 13 responsible-AI projects cleared under the safety pillar, and rank the mission's money below the ₹76,000 crore behind semiconductors — even as a parliamentary panel has faulted it for spending little of its budget and taking too long over the promised chips.
