Kerala to Keralam

The southern state whose people have always called it 'Keralam' in Malayalam is on its way to that name officially. On 24 February 2026 the Union Cabinet approved altering 'Kerala' to 'Keralam', setting in motion the Article 3 route: a Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill will be referred to the state assembly for its views before Parliament takes it up. It is not yet law - a Cabinet nod is the start of the process, not the end.
