Census of India 2027
India's next decadal headcount, Census 2027, is the country's 16th and the first run end to end on smartphones, letting households key in their own details online before an enumerator calls. Cleared by the Union Cabinet in December 2025 at Rs 11,718.24 crore, it runs in two stages: a houselisting round through 2026, now finished in 31 States and Union Territories, and population enumeration anchored to 1 March 2027, which records caste for every respondent on an April 2025 Cabinet Committee decision. The first population count actually begins earlier, from 1 September 2026, in Ladakh and the snow-bound tracts of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
