Indian Navy's Multi-Purpose Vessels

The Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV) project is a two-ship order the Defence Ministry placed with Larsen & Toubro in 2022 for versatile support ships that tow other vessels, handle practice targets, run uncrewed systems and serve as sea-going test beds for new weapons and sensors. Its lead ship, INS Samarthak, joined the fleet at Karwar on 16 October 2026 as the Navy's first indigenous Multi-Purpose Vessel, with more than 75 percent Indian content.
