Green Hydrogen & the Hydrogen Train
Green hydrogen -- hydrogen split from water using renewable electricity, so its only by-product is more water -- is India's bet for cleaning up industries that batteries cannot easily reach: steel, fertiliser, refineries and heavy transport. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, cleared by the Cabinet in January 2023 with a budget of Rs 19,744 crore, wants the country producing at least 5 million tonnes of it every year by 2030. The mission's most visible spin-off is Indian Railways' first hydrogen-powered train, whose manufacturing wrapped up in December 2025 ahead of pilot runs on Haryana's Jind-Sonipat line.
