Private Space Companies in India
India's private space sector now has a scoreboard, and on National Space Day the founders read it out to the Prime Minister. On 13 August 2026 the Rajya Sabha was told of about 440 space-technology start-ups on the national register, 113 IN-SPACe authorisations for 52 non-government firms, and two private commercial launches planned for FY 2026-27. On 23 August Prime Minister Narendra Modi met start-up chief executives: Skyroot, the country's first space-technology unicorn, promised a launch a month by mid next year after its 18 July flight, and others described satellite engines for export, debris capture, in-orbit refuelling and India's first space-pharma venture. Beneath it all: Vikram-1, the first privately developed Indian orbital rocket; a Pixxel-led private Earth-observation constellation; an orbital data-centre demonstrator due late in the year; and ISRO's Debris Free Space Mission and disposal rules meant to keep the orbits usable.
