National Supercomputing Mission
The National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) is India's programme to install supercomputers in academic and research institutions and to make their key components at home; launched in April 2015, it is run jointly by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the electronics and IT ministry (MeitY). It is in the news because a government backgrounder of 4 October 2026 counted 40 machines with 68 petaflops of combined power as of September 2026, against a plan for 50 machines above 123 petaflops.
