India's Balance of Payments Account

The balance of payments is the ledger of everything India exchanged with the rest of the world in a quarter — goods and services traded, income earned and sent home, and capital moving either way. In April to June 2026 the current account was US$4.2 billion short, a slim 0.5 percent of GDP, because record remittances and services earnings absorbed almost all of a much wider goods gap. Reserves were drawn down by US$8.1 billion on a transactions basis that quarter, but the weekly stock has since reached a record US$740.8 billion, in the week ended 28 August 2026.

That reverses the direction of the April-June quarter, when reserves were drawn down US$8.1 billion on a transactions basis.
