Project Cheetah

India's most ambitious wildlife gamble entered its fifth year in 2026. Project Cheetah, begun on 17 September 2022 to restore the world's fastest land animal to a country that had written it off as locally extinct back in 1952, has grown from a single founder batch into a breeding population. In February 2026 it gained a third African partner when nine cheetahs flew in from Botswana to Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh.
