NAMASTE Scheme (Mechanised Sanitation)
NAMASTE — the National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem — is the Social Justice Ministry's programme to make sanitation work safe, mechanised and dignified: zero deaths, no direct human handling of faecal waste, every cleaning done by trained workers with machines. Launched in 2023-24 and implemented through the NSKFDC, it marked its third NAMASTE Day on 14 July 2026 in Kolkata. August 2026 added two reference points for the same goal: a 'Mission Zero' national workshop in Bhubaneswar on 22 August, and the first-ever Foundation Day of the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis on 23 August, where the Commission disclosed that 1,223 of 1,377 reported sewer and septic-tank deaths have been compensated and FIRs lodged in 750.
