NAMASTE Scheme (Mechanised Sanitation)
NAMASTE - the National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem - is the Social Justice Ministry's Central Sector Scheme to make sanitation work safe, mechanised and dignified, run through the NSKFDC since 2023-24: zero deaths, no direct human handling of faecal waste, every cleaning done by trained workers with machines. As on 22 September 2026 it had validated 90,186 sewer and septic-tank workers in every State and Union Territory and profiled 2,51,756 waste pickers in 34 of them, while the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis reports compensation paid in 1,223 of 1,377 reported sewer and septic-tank deaths.
