India's Late Birth and Death Registration Rules
Both Houses of Parliament have now passed the 2026 amendment to India's birth and death registration law, which sends every very late entry past a magistrate - an executive one up to two years, a judicial one after that.

Parliament passed the bill - the Rajya Sabha cleared it on 4 August after the Lok Sabha on 31 July - so an entry made more than two years late will need a judicial magistrate's order. The reports record no Presidential assent yet. Ministers also put birth registration above 99 percent in 2024 and counted about 3.5 lakh registration units.
