Agnipath Scheme and the Agniveers
Agnipath is the Ministry of Defence's scheme, cleared by the Union Cabinet on 14 June 2022, for enlisting young people aged 17.5 to 21 into the Army, Navy or Air Force as Agniveers for four years. It is in the news because on 4 November 2026 the Cabinet gave the 75 percent not retained on merit a second two-year engagement, followed by an offer of regular enrolment to every willing Agniveer who meets the selection criteria.
